5 Reasons A'ja Wilson Is Better Than Caitlin Clark

A'ja Wilson is a much better player and here's why. We're counting down facts that show Wilson is the better talent!

#5 A’ja Wilson helped the South Carolina Gamecocks to a title

Everyone wants to talk about how great Caitlin Clark’s senior year at Iowa was, but forget how it ended. They always block out the part where Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes came up short against the LSU Tigers in the 2023 NCAA title game. Compare that to A’ja Wilson who helped the South Carolina Gamecocks to the NCAA championship in 2017 and you start to see a difference. Wilson also won MVP honors while Clark was denied that hope after losing to Angel Reese and the LSU Tigers. This shows how A’ja Wilson stepped up at the right moment to help her team to a title and Clark didn’t. Clark still has her scoring record and one of the best senior-year runs in recent memory, but Wilson is the champion

#4 Caitlin Clark got wrecked by A'ja Wilson in the regular season

A’ja Wilson versus Caitlin Clark was probably one of the most-watched matchups in the WNBA and for good reason. Unfortunately for Clark, she failed to get Wilson’s number during their four-game series and was outperformed three of the four times. The second matchup saw the Aces destroy the Fever 88-69, but Caitlin Clark did get a double-double this time. However, Wilson outscored Clark 28 to 13 and out-rebounded her. Clark's double-double wasn’t enough to make the difference and Wilson still outscored her rival by 15 points. Game three between the two turned out to be much of the same story after Wilson pulled through for 27 points, two assists, and 12 rebounds in a victory. Clark managed 16 points, six assists, and three rebounds for a very mixed performance. The two women were pretty evenly matched in their fourth game, however. This is where Clark outscored Wilson 18-15 for the first time in her WNBA career. She also touted nine assists and eight rebounds against the Aces.  Despite this being the closest the two have come performance-wise, Wilson still dominated with 19 rebounds during the game. It was enough to knock off the Fever again, 78-74, and end things in a sweep. #3 Caitlin Clark set the assist record while A'ja Wilson takes scoring title

A’ja Wilson and Caitlin Clark set records in 2024, earning their spots in history books. Clark set the assist record in her rookie season with 317 and everyone went gaga over it.  Wilson responded by scoring 1,000 points in 2024, breaking the record for most points in a season by any WNBA player. Both records look great on paper, but they have different implications for the game. This accomplishment also speaks to the kind of player these ladies are. For example, Clark seems content to pass the rock and let someone else take the shot besides her. Wilson on the other hand wants the ball in her possession and has that killer instinct to score.

#2 A’ja Wilson came out victorious in her first career playoff series

The playoffs are a different kind of beast, and it's not easy to get there. Caitlin Clark deserves massive credit for helping the Indiana Fever to the playoffs in 2024 in her rookie season. Not even A’ja Wilson has accomplished this in her rookie season, giving Clark an edge. However, another critical difference between the two plays out in Wilson’s favor. While Clark helped her team to the playoffs, Wilson actually won her first playoff game. Looking at the numbers, Clark struggled with 11 points, eight assists, and four rebounds in her first playoff appearance. Indiana took a grueling 93-69 loss here, which clearly shows Clark being overwhelmed. Then in game two, she broke through for 25 points, nine assists, and six rebounds. She didn’t do enough to win, though. By contrast, in Wilson's first playoff game, she put together 11 points, two blocks, and 11 rebounds. The scoring wasn’t all there back in 2019, but those 11 rebounds made the difference in the game.  [caption id="attachment_75584" align="alignnone" width="599"]Caitlin Clark magazine cover Caitlin Clark was TIME's Athlete of the Year[/caption]

#1 A'ja Wilson is a much better player on defense

A'ja Wilson is one of the most unstoppable defensive players in the WNBA. That's why she ranks 2nd on the 2024 best defensive player list. She averages 2.6 blocks, 1.8 steals, 11.9 rebounds, in 34.4 minutes. Of course, it isn't enough to beat Angel Reese, who dominated in 2024, but she is miles above Clark. Speaking of Clark, she averages 0.7 blocks, 1.3 steals, and 5.7 rebounds in 35.4 minutes per game. This puts her 19th on defense.
